11. Studies on the mechanisms and action of taurine as an osmoeffector in brain cells
نویسنده
چکیده
Taurine has long been known as an osmolyte for intertidal invertebrates which regulate their volume during daily osmotic perturbations caused by the ebb and flood of the sea (Pierce 1982; Gilles 1987; Chamberlin and Strange 1989). However, comprehensive demonstration of taurine’s role as an osmolyte in the mammalian brain would wait until the experiments of Trachtman in 1988 and later Bedford, Lien and Verbalis in the early mid 1990s (Trachtman et al. 1988; Lien et al. 1990; Verbalis and Gullans 1991; Bedford and Leader 1993). While the mammalian brain does not experience the fluctuations in extracellular osmolality that an invertebrate may face during daily changes in sea level, several aspects of brain anatomy and metabolism render volume regulation a high priority for homeostasis of this tissue. The mammalian brain parenchyma is separated from fluid in the blood stream by a relatively water and solute impermeable blood-brain barrier. The high transport rate of glucose and other metabolic substances across this

The brain is an important organ that controls all sensory and motor actions, memory, and emotions. Each anatomical and physiological modulation in various brain centers, results in psychological, behavioral, and sensory-motor changes. Alcohol and addictive drugs such as opioids and amphetamines have been shown to exert a great impact on brain, specifically on the hippocampus. Emerging evidence ...
متن کاملThe Different Mechanisms of Action Potential Propagation in the Heart
It was thought previously that cardiac muscle gap junctions provide low-resistance connections between cells and permit the local-circuit current to flow. Some evidences show that myocardial cells may not require low-resistance connections for successful propagation of the action potential (AP). It seems that some other types of mechanisms must be involved in AP propagation. In this article, we...

متن کاملFipronil: mechanisms of action on various organisms and future relevance for animal models studies
Because insects had developed resistance to several insecticides, today, neonicotinoids and fiproles are used to combat pests. The difference between this two classes of insecticides is that fipronil acts by inhibiting the receptors of nervous cells, while neonicotinoids perturbs the neuronal transmission. The suitable properties of fipronil make that its use to be more obvious on the pesticide...
